Feed and Pet Food Bill

To address changes in the industry and align with international best practice, the new Feed and Pet Food Bill has been drafted to replace the feed-related provisions of the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947 (Act 36 of 1947) with a dedicated framework that aligns with international standards. This modernised framework will place greater emphasis on feed safety, sustainability, and consumer protection, while reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens.

The Feeds and Pet Food Bill is a new, dedicated legislative framework being developed to modernize and eventually replace parts of Act 36 as they pertain to animal feed and pet food. This Bill aims to address gaps in the existing law by creating a more focused, streamlined, and risk-based approach to regulating the manufacturing, import, sale, and distribution of animal feeds and pet foods in South Africa.

Key goals include:

  • Improving feed and pet food safety.
  • Enhancing traceability and transparency across the supply chain.
  • Aligning local standards with international best practices to support export opportunities.
