AFMA Student Nutrition Poster Award

This award recognises outstanding Animal Nutrition graduates who demonstrate excellence in communicating nutritional knowledge through a scientific poster presentation at the annual South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) Congress.

The award aims to:

  • Encourage interest in industry-relevant animal nutrition research
  • Promote scientific quality and presentation skills in student posters
  • Acknowledge academic and professional excellence in this valuable communication medium

Who is Eligible?

  • All student animal nutrition posters accepted by SASAS for presentation at their annual congress
  • Posters must be authored by graduate or postgraduate students
  • Automatic entry: All accepted posters are considered – no submissions to AFMA are required

 

Evaluation Committee

  • A judging panel consisting of technical experts within the animal feed industry will evaluate the posters.

 

Evaluation Criteria

Posters are scored based on the following weighted categories:

  • Scientific relevance
  • Industry relevance (highest weight)
  • Clarity of purpose / problem statement
  • Methods used
  • Results and discussion, including statistical analysis (highest weight)
  • Conclusion
  • Appearance: linguistic quality
  • Appearance: visual impact (layout, design, and adherence to guidelines)

Posters that excel in industry relevance and scientific discussion typically receive the highest marks.

 

The Prize

  • A cash prize from AFMA
  • Complimentary registration to attend the AFMA Symposium
  • Recognition: AFMA social media platforms
  • The award is formally presented during the Gala Dinner at the SASAS Congress

Note: Only the primary student author is eligible to receive the award. Co-authors are not eligible for prize money, though the student’s academic institution will be recognised publicly.

The Process

  • All student posters accepted for presentation in the Animal Nutrition category at the SASAS Congress are automatically entered into the AFMA competition.
  • No separate application to AFMA will be accepted.
  • Prior to the SASAS Congress, these posters are evaluated by a panel of animal feed industry experts who assess each submission against a set of weighted scientific and industry-relevance criteria.
