Strategic Priorities

AFMA’s strategic priorities are rooted in our commitment to building a resilient, competitive, and future-ready animal feed industry in South Africa. From ensuring a consistent and affordable feed supply to promoting innovative nutrition, strengthening feed safety, and investing in skills development, each focus area supports the broader goal of sustainable food security and industry growth.

Affordable Feed Supply

AFMA is in the business of ensuring a consistent supply of sufficient and affordable animal feed for the production of meat, milk, eggs & fish. At AFMA, we understand that access to affordable, high-quality feed is the foundation of a thriving and inclusive livestock industry. That’s why securing a stable and cost-effective feed supply remains one of our top strategic priorities. Through close collaboration with industry stakeholders and government, we actively promote policies and initiatives that enhance the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of feed production in South Africa.

Innovative animal nutrition for sustainable animal production

AFMA promotes innovative nutritional strategies to produce nutritious animal feed in a responsible and sustainable way. AFMA leads efforts to advance science-driven animal nutrition to improve feed efficiency, support animal health, and drive nutrient efficiency and resource optimization. We help shape modern feed standards and encourage responsible practices such as precision feeding, formulation efficiency, and antimicrobial stewardship. Our commitment to the “Safe Feed for Safe Food” principle ensures that feed remains safe, sustainable, and aligned with both regulatory requirements and the expectations of farmers and end consumers.

Training & Skills Development

AFMA is supporting job creation, training opportunities and skills development in the animal feed industry. AFMA is committed to developing a skilled, future-ready workforce for the animal feed sector. Through practical training, continuous professional development, and strengthened partnerships with tertiary institutions, we aim to bridge the gap between tertiary institutions and industry needs. By partnering with tertiary institutions and investing in initiatives like the Feed Mill Operator E-learning Program, AFMA supports long-term industry sustainability and competitiveness.

Safe feed for safe food

AFMA is promoting good manufacturing practices in the provision of safe feed to enhance consumer confidence. Feed safety is a cornerstone of animal health, food quality, and consumer trust. AFMA upholds rigorous industry standards to ensure that every step in the feed production process supports the integrity of the feed-to-food chain. Through our Code of Conduct, proactive contaminant monitoring, biosecurity guidance, and transparent industry reporting, we help safeguard animal welfare and ensure that consumers receive safe, high-quality animal protein.
