AFMA’s Internal Committees: Where expertise drives impact.

AFMA’s internal committees are the engine rooms of our industry – bringing together experts who lead progress across critical focus areas. Being part of a committee means more than staying informed. It’s about directing the agenda, sharing your expertise, and actively contributing to the growth and advancement of South Africa’s feed manufacturing sector. Committees offer a platform for collaboration, innovation, and] impact. Participation is open exclusively to AFMA members who are committed to strengthening the industry from within.

Technical Committee

Focus on feed nutrition, monitoring, safety and biosecurity.

Trade Committee

Oversees trade policies and import/export issues

Regulatory Committee

Focussed on legislation impacting the feed industry

Training & Skills Development Committee

Promotes industry training opportunities and student engagement

Marketing & Promotion Committee

Manages AFMA's events, communication, and brand presence

Technical Committee

The AFMA Technical Committee is responsible for all feed manufacturing-, nutrition- and feeding-related matters. The Technical Committee is engaged in several projects which managed through dedicated portfolio committees. Each of the portfolio committees has a primary convenor and its members are voluntary industry experts (AFMA members) and/or invited specialists.

Key focus areas include:

  • Feed manufacturing and process improvements
  • Nutrition standards and formulation guidelines
  • Feed safety and quality control
  • Ingredient evaluation and approvals
  • Technical guidelines and best practices

Trade Committee

The AFMA Trade Committee addresses all trade-related matters that may impact the procurement and supply of raw materials and feed ingredients used in the feed industry.

Key focus areas include:

  • Global and local commodity trends and events that affect market dynamics
  • International commodity trade agreements
  • Industry procedures at both local and international levels
  • Import tariff negotiations
  • Engagement on government policies affecting trade
  • Agro-logistics and infrastructure
  • Strategic collaboration with value chain partners for the benefit of members

Regulatory Committee

The AFMA Regulatory Committee (RC) serves as the central hub for all matters focused on legislation impacting the feed industry and self-regulation (Code of Conduct). AFMA’s engagement with the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), includes forums such as the Animal Feed Forum (AFF), Inspection Compliance Forum (ICF) and the Strategic Agricultural Inputs Forum (SAIF).

The committee is supported by two advisory groups made up of industry experts:

  • ADCOM-FR – Advisory Committee on Feed Regulation
  • ADCOM-COC – Advisory Committee on the AFMA Code of Conduct


Key focus areas include:

  • Farm feed regulations and farm feed registration guidelines
  • Monitor and address DALRRD delays in farm feed registrations and renewals through collaborative interventions with the Registrar to reduce backlogs.
  • Feeds and Pet Food Bill
  • National Standards (SABS)
  • AFMA Feed Safety management program – Code of Conduct audit scope
  • Monitor global animal feed guidelines from FAO, WHO, Codex, IFIF, ICCF, VICH for harmonization opportunities.

Training & Skills Development Committee

The Training & Skills Development Committee of AFMA is focused on the development and promotion of skills in the animal feed industry, and the facilitation of training opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in the industry.

Key focus areas include:

  • Supporting occupational learning and work-integrated training for feed mill operators
  • Offering short courses to enhance practical feed milling skills
  • Strengthening industry tertiary institutions engagements.
  • Advertising and facilitating job opportunities for our members
  • The committee also manages several prestigious awards


Through these efforts, the committee plays a central role in building the next generation of skilled professionals and promoting a strong, future-ready feed industry in South Africa.

Marketing & Promotion Committee

The AFMA Marketing & Promotion Committee takes responsibility for all marketing and promotional material and content that are published or displayed by AFMA.

Key focus areas include:

  • Overseeing the AFMA Chairman’s Report
  • Managing the AFMA Matrix magazine (print & digital)
  • Approving content for AFMA’s website and social media
  • Coordinating promotions for AFMA-hosted events, including the AGM, Symposium, AFMA Forum, and workshops.
  • Ensuring communication aligns with AFMA’s identity and strategic focus
